Quality of life and comorbidities among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attending a tertiary care centre in southern Tamil Nadu

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common preventable and treatable chronic respiratory disease, affecting millions of people globally. It leads to significant comorbidities and mortality and poses to be a major burden on health care delivery system worldwide.
ObjectiveTo study the prevalence of comorbidities and to assess the quality of life among COPD patients in southern Tamil Nadu.
Materials and methodsA cross-sectional survey was undertaken in our Institute at South Tamil Nadu among 100 patients suffering from COPD, using a pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Socioeconomic and socio demographic details of participants, quality of life and details of comorbid profile were assessed. The data was entered in MS Excel and analysed using SPSS software Trial version 20.0.
ResultsAmong the 100 patients, 44% were males and 56% were females. 72% people had at least 1 comorbidity; of which 21% had 3 comorbidities, 14% had 2 comorbidities and 37% of patients had 1 comorbidity. The comorbidities were diabetes mellitus (19%), myocardial Infarction (12%), congestive heart failure (11%), cerebrovascular accident (2%), solid tumour (11%), dementia (4%), and connective tissue disorders (9%). The mean Charlson comorbidity score [SD] is 4.73 [1.83]. The quality of life was found to be significantly bad in patients > 60 years of age and in females (p value 0.00).
ConclusionBy this survey, it would be clear that, COPD patients are affected by comorbid conditions which have a negative impact in their life. Also, longstanding COPD may develop acute exacerbation and it may also lead to mortality. So early management is recommended to alleviate the sufferings of the patients.
