Purpose <p>Eye injuries are causes of vision impairment and disability worldwide. Adolescence, marked by increased social, educational, and occupational engagement, is a crucial period during which such injuries can lead to long-term effects due to extended life expectancy and ongoing development. This study aims to examine the burden and trends of eye injuries in this population.</p> Methods <p>Data on the incidence of eye injuries and their associated causes among adolescents aged 10 to 24 years were obtained from Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to assess trends in age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) of eye injuries. To capture these patterns, we estimated the annual percentage change (APC) and the average annual percentage change (AAPC), with analyses stratified by sex, underlying cause, sociodemographic index (SDI), 21 regions, and 204 countries and territories.</p> Results <p>In 2021, the global incidence of adolescent eye injuries was 539.47 per 100,000 population (95% uncertainty interval [UI], 362.65–793.97). The leading cause of eye injuries in 2021 was foreign bodies. From 1990 to 2021, the overall incidence showed a decreasing trend, with an AAPC of − 0.74 (95% confidence interval [CI] − 0.78 to − 0.71; <i>P</i> &lt; 0.001). Despite the overall decline, an inflection point was identified in 2015, after which the incidence began to rise steadily.</p> Conclusions <p>Eye injuries remain a notable health concern among adolescents, and recent indications of a reversal in incidence trends, suggesting the potential value of developing more targeted preventive strategies that address relevant risk factors in this population.</p>

Purpose
