摘要

Introduction

A healthy lifestyle is a key construct that has a direct impact on the health and well-being of older people. It is influenced by multiple socio-cultural factors. Despite a high older population, little is known about healthy lifestyle patterns among the Sri Lankan older population. The present study was conducted to assess healthy lifestyle and its determinants among the older people aged 60 to 74 living in a Sri Lankan setting.

Methods

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The participants were selected randomly using a sample frame prepared based on the updated electorate list. The healthy lifestyle was assessed using the Healthy Lifestyle Profile Scale (HLPS). A judgmentally validated questionnaire was used to ascertain other associated factors. Chi-square and multiple logistic regression tests were used to identify bivariate associations and determinants of the healthy lifestyle, respectively.

Results

A total of 922 participants were interviewed. Out of them, only 29.4% had a better level of healthy lifestyle. Following multivariate analysis, the level of education, living with a spouse, multiple comorbidities, disabilities, psychological distress, and community participation were identified as key determinants of the healthy lifestyle among participants.

Conclusions

Most of the older people did not have a healthier lifestyle, and it is a multifactorial construct that needs more attention while promoting health among the older people.
