Introduction <p>Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to global health and human development. Low- and middle-income countries suffer the highest AMR burden. Hospital staff’s knowledge about AMR is crucial for effective infection control and prevention, but studies suggest a need for improvement. This study assessed the knowledge and perception of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) among healthcare professionals (HCPs).</p> Methods <p>A cross-sectional survey was conducted at two secondary healthcare facilities using an online pre-tested questionnaire which had four sections. Participants’ knowledge, activities status, and perception of antimicrobial stewardship were surveyed.</p> Results <p>A total of 480 HCPs which included Physicians, Pharmacists, Dentists, Nurses and Medical Laboratory Scientists took part in the study. Majority were females, 318 (66.2%), Nurses, 214 (44.6%), and had been in practice for up to 5 years, 141 (29.4%). HCPs from both facilities had adequate knowledge of AMS and majority were familiar with the term, 332 (69.2%). Profession was the main predictor of the level of knowledge and status of activities of antimicrobial stewardship. However, about half, 225 (46.9%) stated that antimicrobials are overused nationally and agreed that establishing national antimicrobial surveillance can combat AMR.</p> Conclusions <p>HCPs demonstrated good knowledge, and a fairly positive perception of AMS. The study revealed educational and training gaps in the surveyed hospitals underscoring the continuous need for capacity building to improve knowledge and change perceptions on AMS.</p>
