Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of antimicrobial use and resistance among nursing mothers in the Cape Coast Metropolis of Ghana: a cross-sectional study

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to public health, with serious consequences for individuals and healthcare systems worldwide. This study investigated the relationship between the sociodemographic status of nursing mothers and their knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards antimicrobial use and resistance.
MethodA cross-sectional descriptive design was used to collect data from 656 nursing mothers in health facilities across the Cape Coast Metropolis between April and July 2023. A mixed questionnaire was used to conduct the interviews, and data analysis was performed using R software version 4.3.2. Chi-square statistics and multivariate regression analysis were employed to examine the relationships between demographic characteristics and mothers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices.
ResultOut of the 656 mothers interviewed, 456 (69.5%) had not heard of the term 'antimicrobial' before. Regarding antibiotic resistance, 210/656 (32.0%) had heard of the term. Additionally, 377/656 (57.5%) believed that antibiotic misuse during breastfeeding could affect their children. Breastfeeding by mothers with tertiary education was a good predictor in terms of participants’ knowledge of antimicrobial resistance (B = 1.57, P < 0.05), as well as in their attitudes regarding antimicrobial use (B = 0.55, P < 0.05). About 36.9% (242/656) believed antibiotics could be used to treat viral infections like the flu.
ConclusionThe study highlights a significant knowledge gap among nursing mothers regarding antimicrobial use and resistance. A common misunderstanding is that antibiotics can treat viral infections like the common cold and flu.
Additionally, nearly half of the mothers were unaware that misusing antibiotics could affect their child’s health. Despite these gaps, the study shows that nursing mothers generally have commendable attitudes and practices toward antimicrobial use.
