Resilience, physical activity and life satisfaction in Greek nursing students: the mediating role of body appreciation

Nursing students are more likely to experience psychological distress and face emotional challenges due to early exposure to clinical settings and direct patient care. Resilience and life satisfaction are critical for academic success and future occupational longevity. This study examined the relationship between resilience, physical activity, and life satisfaction, focusing on the mediating role of body appreciation.
MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 324 nursing students from all accredited nursing departments in Greece. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires, including the Body Appreciation Scale (BAS-2), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM).
ResultsBody appreciation (β = 0.46) and resilience (β = 0.38) were positively associated with life satisfaction. Body appreciation partially mediated the association between resilience and life satisfaction (indirect effect: β = 0.22). In contrast, higher physical activity was weak but significantly associated with lower life satisfaction both directly (β = −0.14, p = 0.006), and indirectly through lower body appreciation (indirect effect: β = -0.12). Fit index values according to the model were χ² = 1018.582, p < 0.001; CMIN/DF = 3.525; CFI = 0.879 and RMSEA = 0.088 (90% CI: 0.083 to 0.094), suggesting an acceptable but not optimal fit.
ConclusionsResilience and body appreciation were positively associated with life satisfaction among nursing students, whereas the role of physical activity proved negative and more complex than expected. Interventions that foster body appreciation and resilience, together with strategies that cultivate intrinsic motivation for physical activity should be integrated into nursing curricula and student support programs, rigorously evaluated and further examined in future longitudinal and intervention studies.
