摘要

Background

Adequate nutrition during infancy and early childhood is crucial for developing a child’s full potential. After birth, the capacity to achieve standard growth and development will be determined by selecting an appropriate diet and adequate feeding frequency. Formula feeding is feeding an infant manufactured from cow’s and other animals’ milk, which has been processed to make it suitable and copy or mimic the nutrient composition of breast milk. Maternal feeding practices are increasingly being replaced by formula feeding due to the global promotion of formula milk products, which is closely tied to the globalization of milk production. Feeding formula to an infant will predispose to infection and other health risks. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of formula feeding and its associated factors among mothers of infants aged 0–6 months in public hospitals in Southwest Ethiopia, 2022.

Method

An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 559 mothers of infants 0–6 months of age from May 13 to May 28, 2022. Data were collected using a structured, interviewer-administered, and pre-tested questionnaire. The data were entered into EpiData version 4.2.0 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Bivariable and multivariable analysis was done by using binary logistic regression.

Result

Formula feeding knowledge and practice were found to be 61.6% and 36.8% respectively. Being a government employee [AOR 2.37; 95% CI, 1.23–4.58], giving birth via a cesarean section [AOR 3.03, 95% CI, 1.66–5.52], and pre-lacteal feeding [AOR 4.88, 95% CI, 3.09–7.69] were significantly associated with formula feeding practice.

Conclusion

In this study, nearly greater than one third of the study participant were practice formula feeding. Being a government employee, cesarean mode of delivery, and pre-lacteal feeding were significantly associated with formula-feeding practices. Therefore, educating mothers about the importance of breastfeeding and providing support for mothers giving birth through a cesarean mode of delivery to promote exclusive breastfeeding should be prioritized at both community and institutional levels.
