12-month clinical outcomes of the Evolux™ extended monofocal intraocular lens following cataract surgery

To evaluate the visual performance of a non-diffractive extended monofocal intraocular lens (Evolux™; SIFI, Catania, Italy) 12 months following cataract surgery.
MethodsThis retrospective, non-randomized, single-arm study included 116 eyes from 82 patients who underwent cataract surgery with Evolux™ IOL implantation. Patients underwent preoperative and postoperative assessments including uncorrected and best-corrected distance (UDVA, CDVA) and near visual acuity (UNVA, CNVA), as well as refractive accuracy and defocus curve evaluation. Postoperative measurements were recorded at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.
ResultsAt 12 months postoperatively, UDVA improved from 0.89 ± 0.54 logMAR to 0.10 ± 0.14 logMAR (p < 0.001), and CDVA improved from 0.41 ± 0.40 logMAR to 0.04 ± 0.08 logMAR (p < 0.001). 62% of eyes achieved a UDVA of 20/20 or better, while 96% reached at least 20/40. Refractive accuracy was high, with 76% of eyes achieving a postoperative spherical equivalent within ± 0.50 D and 95% within ± 1.00 D, indicating strong predictability. The defocus curve confirmed functional vision of 0.2 logMAR or better across a continuous defocus range of 2.00 D, supporting effective intermediate and near vision.
ConclusionEvolux™ demonstrated good distance vision and enhanced intermediate vision without the visual disturbances commonly associated with multifocal or diffractive extended depth-of-focus IOLs. These findings suggest that Evolux™ is an effective solution for patients seeking greater spectacle independence and improved functional vision following cataract surgery.
