The comparison of general health indicators among older people residents in nursing homes and homes in Iran: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Living in nursing homes can lead to changes in the General Health Indicators of older people. This study aimed to systematically compare the General Health Indicators of older people living in nursing homes with older people living in homes.
MethodRequired data were collected through searching PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, SID, MagIran, and element databases with relevant keywords up to 20 Jun 2024. Reference check, gray literature search, hand searching, and expert contact also were done. The reporting quality of studies was assessed by the STROBE checklist. The random effect model was used to meta-analyze using StataCorp: 16.
ResultsOut of 1182 retrieved studies, finally, 24 articles were included. In total, 74 outcomes were examined, of which 64 were significantly different between the two groups. Among the examined outcomes, 67 cases were undesirable among the residents in nursing homes. Mean difference between the two groups for case of general health (using General Health Questionnaire -28) was 12.07 [2.46 –- 21.69], for loneliness 23.09 [4.32 –- 41.86], for Depression (using Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) instrument) 0.58 [-0.04 –- 1.20], QOL (using LEIPAD Questionnaire) -7.68 [-11.81 –- -3.55], QOL (using SF-36) -10.65 [-19.03 –- -2.28]. The average quality of reporting the articles was 26.1 (0 -36).
ConclusionAccording to the results of this study, a significant difference in General Health Indicators between resident and non-resident older people in nursing homes was found. More attention to improving General Health Indicators among older people in nursing homes is necessary.
