Abstract

The histological development of the digestive system in Pterophyllum scalare larvae was studied under controlled conditions (30 ± 2°C). Eggs were incubated, and samples from 0 to 25 days post-hatching (dph) were processed for analysis. Developmental stages (preflexion, flexion, postflexion) were determined based on notochord flexion. At hatching (0 dph), the gut was a straight tube dorsal to the yolk sac. By 7 dph, the bucco-pharynx showed squamous epithelium, oral valves, taste buds, and goblet cells. Gastric differentiation started at 2 dph, with the formation of Gastric glands by 11 dph, and gets completed by 24 dph. Initially a simple tube at 1 dph, the intestinal development of mucosal folds and formation of supranucleolar vacuoles by 7–9 dph was evident. These findings help refine larval-rearing protocols, address developmental bottlenecks, and improve weaning processes.
