Global Research Trends in Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals—A Two-Decade (2003–2023) Bibliometric Perspective

Over the past two decades, research on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has witnessed a surge due to their involvement in various health-related issues. A systematic analysis of publications (bibliographic) might help understand the research pattern in the field of EDCs. This study aimed to investigate the scientific publications between 2003–2023 based on the data available in the Dimensions database. Bibliometric analysis was performed via VOSviewer. A total of 210,253 publications were sourced and 9552 relevant publications were extracted from the database and imported into VOSviewer for further analysis. The results showed an increase in the annual publication trend from 2003 to 2023. The USA (n = 2335) followed by China (n = 1743) and the UK (n = 428) were leading countries in collaborations contributing to research in the area of EDC. The Science of The Total Environment was second in the number of publications (376) but is leading in the number of citations (17,333). Chemosphere is leading the list of journals having 386 publications. Among the notable authors, Thomas R. Zoeller is recognized as the highly cited author (citation = 9461) whose work is highly acknowledged in the scientific community. Kurunthachalam Kannan has the highest link strength (26) indicating highly collaborative approach. Antonia M. Calafat (n = 61) led the co-citation list and set a benchmark in the quality of publications. The progressive contribution to publications in the time scale promotes the key areas, major hotspots, and active contributors may provide a baseline and opportunity for future research work.
