Application of Fire-Retardant Compositions for Veneer Processing in Plywood Production

Plywood is widely used in the construction, furniture, and transport industries. The area of application sets its own requirements for the manufacturers of this material. Fire-resistant properties of plywood are one of the priority and significant criteria in the production of freight transport, trains and wagons, as well as water transport for various purposes. Technological solutions for increasing the fire resistance of plywood can be aimed at introducing an additional operation into the technological process for treating veneer with special compounds that prevent the spread of flame along the wood surface. The studied fire-retardant composition allows obtaining plywood with fire resistance indicators higher than modern samples. This composition can improve the conditions in the workshop during application and gluing when compared with the existing productions. When veneer treated with a fire-retardant composition based on tris(monoethanolamine) salt is strongly heated, foam is formed on the surface, which prevents the spread of ignition. This is facilitated by the presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups in the structure of tris(2-hydroxyethyl)amine) salt.
