Taxonomic and Genetic Diversity of Freshwater Mollusks of Bering Island (the Commander Islands, Kamchatka Krai, Russia)

New data on the taxonomic and genetic diversity of freshwater mollusks of Bering Island (the Commander Islands) are presented. Twelve species of freshwater mollusks belonging to four genera and two families were detected. The discovered mollusks are widespread in the Holarctic and Palearctic. Phylogeographic analysis of sequences of the 16S rRNA gene fragment in bivalves of the genus Euglesa from Bering Island demonstrated a proximity of the studied populations for this gene to populations from the reservoirs of Eurasia and North America. Apparently, the settlement of freshwater mollusks of the genus Euglesa to Bering Island occurred from Eastern Europe or Siberia, or both of the proposed routes existed. The distribution of the Sphaerium nitidum species probably occurred both across the Atlantic and via Beringia. The analysis of sequences of the mtDNA COI gene fragment in gastropods indicates that the dispersal of the Galba pacifica species occurred from the Japanese Archipelago, while the Radix auricularia species from Northeast Asia.
