Mycelial Fungi in the Bottom Sediments of the Black Sea

The material for studying fungi from the bottom sediments of the Black Sea has been collected on voyages of the R/V Professor Vodianitsky (2013, 2016, and 2017) at 64 stations in the depth range of 18–2080 m. The fungi are isolated by the culture method. Forty-two species of terrigenous fungi have been identified, mostly from the families of Aspergillaceae and Pleosporaceae (52.4% of the total number, or 17 and 5 species, respectively). A low abundance and frequency of occurrence of all species is recorded; Stachybotrys chartarum is most often noted (29.7%). A total of 1–16 taxa are isolated from the samples for nutrient media; the number varies from 12–25 363 (on average 2579 ± 4882) CFU/g of dry soil. The species composition and structure of mycocomplexes of sediments of various depths and different granulometric composition are revealed. The highest indicators of species richness and abundance are recorded at depths of <100 m and in muddy sediments. The preservation of the viability of fungi in the sediments of the hydrogen sulfide zone has been confirmed. The influence of sediment depth, temperature, and salinity on the structure of mycocomplexes has not been established.
