Abstract <p>A new species of diatoms, <i>Hippodonta makarovae</i> sp. nov., is described using scanning electron microscopy. It has a valve shape similar to other species of the genus, <i>Hippodonta hungarica</i> Grunow and <i>Hippodonta pumila</i> Lange-Bertalot, Hofmann &amp; Metzeltin, but differs from them in the main diagnostic quantitative features: the length and width of the valve and the number of striae and lineolae in 10 µm.</p>
