Abstract <p>The main approaches and principles of structural regionology as a promising area of public geography are revealed, and definitions of structural regionology and public geography are formulated. The essence of the concept of the continental–oceanic dichotomy and the issues of its interaction with related sciences are considered. Examples of established patterns of a continental–oceanic nature are given. The analysis of the views of well-known foreign scientists on the role of geographical factors in economic development, including the position relative to the sea, is given. The achievements of structural regionology, shown by the example of the concept of the continental–oceanic dichotomy, indicate the unfounded nature of a number of accusations against social geography.</p>
