Cartographic Techniques When Planning the Expansion of Energy Systems in the Eastern Regions of Russia

This paper focuses on the experience of preparing and using cartographic material to show the initial conditions and findings of studies on forecasting the development of the energy subsectors in the eastern regions of Russia. The cartographic techniques, along with the initial information and the tools used to prepare illustrations, are described. The paper presents original materials prepared in cartographic and graphical forms. These materials convey information through symbols and signs for the energy subsectors in regions of the Russian Federation (Irkutsk oblast and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)), and for some territorial or municipal entities (the technologically isolated energy system of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Katangsky District of Irkutsk oblast). Some examples that demonstrate how quantitative indicators are used to divide the territory based on specific indices (levels of gas infrastructure development and renewable energy potential) are given. This study demonstrates the possibility of integrating diverse information to formulate calculation indicators for the technical and economic analysis of gas pipeline routes. The use of cartographic techniques in studies on the expansion of energy systems enables the visualization of their geospatial data, which, combined with energy and economic estimates, as well as various indicators, enhances the validity and facilitates the understanding of the research results.
