Proteins as Candidates for the Neurodegeneration Biomarkers

To date, there are no blood protein markers which levels could reliably detect the early stages of neurodegeneration, and the search for a single such marker is unreasonable. The review aims to identify blood proteins that may be candidates for the role of markers of early (preclinical) stages of neurodegeneration, taking into account the possibility of developing a diagnostic panel. Using available databases, we searched for scientific publications in which the presence of neurodegenerative processes was confirmed by the results of neurocognitive tests, by a decrease in cognitive functioning, in some cases with the inclusion of neuroimaging examinations. A list of proteins-candidates for inclusion in the panel of biomarkers of early stages of neurodegeneration has been compiled, wherein the proteins are present in serum/plasma and/or blood cells, they can be detected by immunoprobes, their concentrations change in the early (including preclinical) stages of neurodegenerative diseases, and there are possibilities to obtain such proteins in recombinant systems and to develop an assay using immunoprobes for screening studies.
