Features of Erythropoiesis in Long-Tailed Ground Squirrels Urocitellus undulatus at Arousal from Hibernation

The present study constitutes a continuation of earlier researchon erythropoiesis in hibernating long-tailed ground squirrels (Urocitellus undulatus), which revealedmorpho functional differences between the bone marrow (BM) of thehumerus and femur of animals. It has been suggested that the observed characteristicsmay be indicative of the inherited adaptation of hibernating animalsto significant internal temperature gradients that occur duringtheir periodic awakenings. In order to verify this assumption а comprehensiveinvestigation encompassing the analysis of flow cytometry and histologicalfeatures of the humeral and femoral BM, complemented by a seriesof hematological and biochemical blood tests conducted at variousstages of the life cycle of nuclear cells, was undertaken. The findingsof this investigation revealed that during the arousal, the femoralBM exerts the most significant influence on the formation of a proliferativepool of cells implicated in the process of erythropoiesis. Concurrently, thehumeral BM assumes a pivotal role in the maintenance of a polypotentcellular composition. The obtained data have expanded fundamentalknowledge of the processes responsible for stable erythropoiesisin hibernating animals under critical conditions of transition froma torpid to a euthermic state.
