Abstract <p>The accelerated pace of technological progress, in combination with the current trends in the global economy, has caused an increase in demand for critical metals, including nickel. Nickel production is a strategically important sector of the national economy. In recent years, nickel demand from Russian businesses has been continuously increasing, while consumption structure has been changing as new areas of nickel use emerge. The study establishes the structural features of nickel production. The baseline and promising emerging areas of consumption of nickel products are systematized. Development factors of the Russian nickel market are identified. Forecasts of nickel demand, assuming successful implementation of plans for the development of electric transport in the country, are compiled. Recommendations aimed at supporting sustainable development of the national nickel industry in the context of ongoing transformations are provided.</p>
