Abstract <p>Functionally substituted 1-benzofurans were synthesized via a three-component condensation of diatomic phenols, phenylglyoxal hydrate, and active methylene compounds. In the reaction employing pyrocatechol, the initially formed adduct does not undergo further cyclization.</p>
