Abstract <p>A new approach has been developed for the synthesis of 2-(5-aryl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-3<i>H</i>-pyrrol-3-ylidene)malononitriles by the reaction of 5-arylfuran-2-ones with ammonia, followed by the condensation of the resulting γ-oxobutanamides with tetracyanoethylene.</p>
