Abstract <p>The reaction of 2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroacetonitrile with nitrile oxides gave 3-aryl(methyl)-5-(fluoro­dinitromethyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles which reacted with ethanolic potassium hydroxide to afford 3-aryl(methyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-ols as a result of elimination of the fluorodinitromethyl group as fluoro(dinitro)methane potassium salt.</p>
