Reconstruction of Periods with High Spring Floods of the Tura River Using Tree Rings of Populus nigra

Poplar tree rings are an important source of data for studies of water flow dynamics and flood on the Tura River. A tree-ring chronology was constructed based on the width of the annual ring of black poplar, lasting approximately 150 years. Correlation analysis between the chronology of tree ring width, water discharge of the Tura River (at the Turinsk hydrographic station) and weather-climatic variables (air temperature, precipitation) revealed significant positive relationships with water discharge corresponding to the spring flood period and May air temperature. No relationship was found between the chronology of tree-ring width and precipitation in individual months. Based on the tree-ring chronology of poplar, a reconstruction of May water discharge for the period 1875–2022 was performed. Years of high and low spring floods and their impact on poplar radial growth are discussed.
