Abstract <p>Soil quality is an essential element of ecosystem functionality and agricultural sustainability, and it varies among seasons and land use systems. Therefore, it is crucial to understand these variations for better soil health management and sustainable land use practices. The present study explores the seasonal variation in soil quality along the land use system in Dampa tiger reserve, Mizoram, Northeast India. Soil samples from two depths (0‒10 and 10‒20 cm) were collected in replicates from selected land use systems during pre, post-monsoon and monsoon seasons and brought to the laboratory for estimation of soil physico-chemical properties following standard methodologies. The additive and weighted methods were followed to determine the seasonal Soil Quality Index (SQI) involving selection of indicators as minimum data set, assigning scores to these indicators, and calculation of SQI. The analysis revealed significant effects of both land use and season on soil moisture content, water holding capacity, pH, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil organic matter, available potassium and available nitrogen at <i>p</i> &lt; 0.05. SOC, pH, and available phosphorus constituted the minimum data set for estimation of SQI. Among the seasons, the post-monsoon was found to be the best for soil quality in all the land use systems except for traditional “jhum” cultivation site. The SQI was also found to decline when forests are converted into monoculture plantation of teak and oil palm. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the seasonal variation and land use system impacts on soil quality, providing a framework for policymakers for assessing and improving soil conditions for long-term ecological and economic stability.</p>
