Abstract

Hybrid vacuum photon detectors developed for large-scale astroparticle physics experiments are reviewed. Hybrid photon detectors with luminescent screens have played a particularly important part in Cherenkov arrays used in the NT-200 deep-water neutrino telescope and the Tunka cosmic-ray experiment. This paper is devoted to the 40th anniversary since the beginning of the development of the QUASAR-370 hybrid photon detector lying at the heart of the NT-200 and Tunka experiments. Now hybrid vacuum photon detectors with microchannel plates (MCP-PMTs) are actively used in the JUNO neutrino experiment. The status of and trends in development of hybrid photon detectors and prospects for their use in next-generation experiments are discussed.
