Abstract <p>Analytical expression for the mean shower length of the shower produced by the proton in air, obtained with use of the cascade theory, is used for studying connection of the hadronic interaction characteristics with the longitudinal shower development. Two hadronic generators, EPOS-LHC and QGSJETII-04, are intercompared. It is analyzed how interaction characteristics are related to the difference in the mean shower length energy dependence. Results of the calculations are also compared with results of simulations.</p>
