Abstract <p>The possibility of determining water-soluble formazans of tetrazolium dyes WST-8 and XTT by Raman spectroscopy was studied. It was shown that XTT does not have a pronounced Raman spectrum and is therefore not suitable for determination by this method. Raman spectroscopy was used to compare WST-8 formazan and water-insoluble MTT formazan. It was demonstrated that WST-8 can be determined with greater sensitivity. However, the signal intensity in the presence of <i>Escherichia coli</i> cells was higher for MTT formazan, with negligible differences in the detection limit of cells between the two reagents.</p>
