Abstract

We provided the methodology and results of a study on the ion plasma flow of a high-current vacuum arc. The arc was powered by a pulse with an amplitude of up to 12 kV (13.5 kA) and a duration of 13 µs (FWHM). The discharge was created in a flat axisymmetric electrode arrangement with a copper cylindrical cathode and a molybdenum anode. Small collector sensors were used to obtain ion current density diagrams as a function of angle and time. The dependence of ion current density on the diameter of the cathode is shown.
