Abstract <p>Results are presented from analyzing the location of a region near the Earth’s surface illuminated by auroral hiss, based on observations at the Barentsburg Observatory (BAB). The results are compared to the location of the region of field-aligned current amplification, established using observations by the AMPERE satellite project, and the position of polar auroras according to data from the BAB all-sky camera. An event is detected when two separated regions of field-aligned current amplification exist simultaneously, and histograms of the distribution of azimuth angles of arrival at BAB have two maxima corresponding to the direction from which waves arrive at the point of observation from the side of these regions. Also discussed are an event of the hiss illuminated region moving in longitude from east to west simultaneously with the movement of the auroral spot and the region of field-aligned current in the same direction, along with the simultaneous displacement of the illuminated region and that of the amplification of the outflowing field-aligned downwards in latitude toward the auroral latitudes. Based on the results from this analysis, a conclusion is reached about a possible relationship between the hiss occurring near the Earth’s surface and the existence and position of field-aligned currents.</p>
