Abstract

It is discovered that the effect giant enhancement of the intensity of inelastic light scattering and the considerable dependence of the coefficient enhancement on the thickness of a metal (silver) can be observed in metallic films with periodic holes (the size of a square hole is half the period). It is shown that strong oscillations of the coefficient of enhancement are observed when the thickness of a silver film is changed in the range of 5 to 140 nm, and the amplitude of the oscillations can be more than an order of magnitude. The observed oscillations are explained in terms of the resonant excitation of standing plasmon–polariton waves in metal films, the dispersion of which changes strongly along with the variation of the metal’s thickness.
