A New Species of Blind Skink of the Genus Dibamus Duméril et Bibron, 1839 (Squamata, Dibamidae) from Cambodia

A new species of blind skink of the genus Dibamus Duméril et Bibron, 1839 is described based on five specimens collected in Bokor National Park, Kampot Province, southern Cambodia. Dibamus elephantinus sp. n. differs from other species of the genus by (1) body length (SVL) up to 129.3 mm, (2) tail length relative to body length (TL/SVL) 17–22%, (3) an incomplete rostral suture, (4) complete nasal and labial sutures, (5) single postocular, (6) three scales at the posteromedial margin of the first infralabial, (7) two scales at the posterior margin of the second infralabial, (8) an enlarged medial infralabial scale, (9) 19 midbody scale rows, (10) 22 transverse scale rows just posterior to the head, (11) 17–19 transverse scale rows just anterior to vent, (12) 178–202 ventral scales, (13) 46–52 subcaudal scales, (14) the relative size of frontal to frontonasal scales (FSW/FNSW = 127–136%), (15) relative size of interparietal to surrounding scales (IPW/NSW = 111–140%), (16) in males, hindlimbs longer than head length (HLL/HL = 74–78%), and (17) a light colored band on the body may be present or absent. An osteological description of the new species is given based on computer microtomography data. Genetically and morphologically, Dibamus elephantinus sp. n. is most closely related to D. dalaiensis, which inhabits the western Cardamom Mountains of Cambodia. The new species inhabits the montane evergreen forests of the Elephant Mountains (Phnom Damrei) at altitudes of about 1000 m above sea level. Dibamus elephantinus sp. n. is the 27th species of blind skink in the genus Dibamus and the second species of this genus found in Cambodia. A key to the species identification of Dibamus species inhabiting continental Southeast Asia is proposed.
