<p>Matykil Island is the largest in the Yamskiye Islands archipelago located in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. Northern red-backed voles inhabiting Matykil island differ sharply from other populations of the species in a number of morphological, genetic, and ecological traits. Based on a comparative analysis of external and craniometric characters, Northern red-backed voles from the Matykil island were identified as a separate subspecies, <i>Clethrionomys rutilus matykilensis</i> subsp. n.</p>
