Diversity of Micromycete Metabolites in Halophyte Plants on the White Sea Coast

The occurrence and content of 16 low-molecular-weight metabolites characteristic of microscopic fungi (mycotoxins) were determined in halophyte plants from the coast of Kandalaksha Bay (the White Sea) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Typical metabolites were emodin, alternariol, and mycophenolic acid, while T-2 toxin and roridin A were not found. The metabolic profile was characterized by the presence of fumonisins in common eelgrass (Zostera marina); ochratoxin A, citrinin, diacetoxyscirpenol, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and PR-toxin in sea milkwort (Glaux maritima); and cyclopiazonic acid and ergot alkaloids in polar scurvygrass (Cochlearia groenlandica), sea milkwort (G. maritima), common saltmarsh grass (Puccinellia maritima), and seaside arrowgrass (Triglochin maritima). A significant content of emodin and sterigmatocystin was found in sea sandwort (Honckenya peploides), and rare cases of contamination were noted for sea aster (Aster tripolium) and sea plantain (Plantago maritima). For Cochlearia groenlandica, Puccinellia maritima, and Pojarkova’s glasswort (Salicornia pojarkovae), collected in different years from remote ecotopes, significant variability in the content of emodin and alternariol was found. The possible involvement of plant endophytes in response to changing environmental conditions is discussed.
