Ecological-Geochemical Assessment of Heavy Metal and Metalloid Contamination of the Soils of Salekhard (Western Siberia)

The elemental composition and properties of the surface soil horizons (0‒10 cm) and soil particles of less than 10 μm (PM10 fraction) of the city of Salekhard have been studied. The content of Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Mo, Sn, Sb, Cs, Ba, W, Pb, Bi, and U is determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It is shown that the average contents of potentially toxic elements in urban soils are lower than the clarkes of the upper continental crust. A general geochemical association of Cu–Zn–W–Co–Sb is identified with respect to the background soils for total content and PM10 fraction. In PM10 fraction, the contents of Zn, Cu, Co, W, and Bi are 4.5 times higher than the total content in soils. Based on the total contamination and enrichment factors for the Salekhard soils and their PM10 particles, the low contamination level is revealed.
