Abstract—

The Kamchatka Megathrust Earthquake (Mw = 8.8) occurred on July 29, 2025 was ranked among the top ten strongest earthquakes on the planet in the instrumental era of observations and was the first earthquake recorded by a near-field accelerometer network in the entire history of seismic observations in Kamchatka. The Kamchatka Megathrust Earthquake consisted of several large segments ruptured sequentially and progressively and thus contributed to the magnitude underestimation in the first minutes, in addition to the magnitude saturation effect.
