Abstract <p>The study considers the Kuril Islands, an island arc above the southern half of the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone, western Pacific. The Kurils include a main volcanic arc of the Greater Kurils and a forearc—the submarine Vityaz Ridge with the Lesser Kuril island chain in its south. As the Kurils are remote and mostly uninhabited, they are much less studied than their neighbours, the Kamchatka Peninsula in the north and the Japanese archipelago in the south. Volcanic landforms are the most common in the Kurils, and active volcanism predominates over other surface processes. Most of the Kuril Islands have a volcanic origin, except the outermost Shumshu and the Lesser Kurils, which are flat remnants of wave-cut Pleistocene terrace sequence.</p>
