Invasive Diatom Species in Sinking Material of the Lofoten Basin (the Norwegian Sea)

The invasive diatom species in sinking material of the Lofoten Basin of the Norwegian Sea have been studied in detail for the first time. The material was collected from sediment traps monthly during a year (2017–2018). A total of eleven invasive diatom species were identified; the predominant were Fragilariopsis oceanica, Podosira glacialis, Thalassiosira antarctica, Neodenticula seminae, Shionodiscus oestrupii, etc. Multivariate analysis has shown a reliable relationship between the within-year variability of vertical fluxes of invasive diatom species and the contents of N, P, POC and the Si/Al ratio in the sinking material. The appearance of the North Pacific planktonic species Neodenticula seminae in the Lofoten Basin sinking material is related to the transport of warm North Atlantic water masses from the Labrador Sea. The periodical increase in the number of sea-ice and ice-neritic species in the Lofoten Basin (the insignificant increase from October to December and more significant from March to April) is related to the course of seasonal variability of the sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean and sea ice export through the Fram Strait into the North Atlantic.
