Abstract <p>The results of the studies of the “washout shales,” the rocks composing a clay sequence with variable thickness and controversial genesis at the border of the Lower and Middle Riphean in the northern part of the Bashkir uplift, the western wing of the Bashkir meganticlinorium (west of the northern part of the Southern Urals) are presented. The data obtained on petrographic and mineralogical-geochemical compositions of the “washout shales,” the distribution of lanthanoids in them, substantiate one of the previous opinions for the first time, that the “washout shales” in the Bakal ore field are a product of the transformation of tephrogenic rocks. These tephroids are compared with volcanogenic-sedimentary rocks in the Mashak Formation, which lies at the base of the consolidated section of the Middle Riphean Jurmatian Group of the Taganay-Beloretsk tectonic unit – the eastern wing of the Bashkir meganticlinorium.</p>
