Abstract <p>For the first time, the U–Pb age of columbite-(Mn) from the spodumene pegmatites from the Kolatan deposit, located in Nuristan province, Afghanistan, was determined using the isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) method. Columbite-tantalite crystals have a zonal structure, while the rims are enriched in Ta by 2 times, compared with Nb. The ore generations were formed at the magmatic stage of the formation of rare-metal pegmatites, and then during the development of secondary veinlets of high-Nb columbite-(Mn). Nb deficiency at the final (hydrothermal?) stage has led to the crystallization of tantalite-(Mn), which fills fractures in previously formed minerals. The obtained U–Pb age of columbite-(Mn) is 18.35 ± 0.08 Ma. It is the first result of direct dating of ore minerals from rare-metal pegmatites of the Nuristan province, Afghanistan, by the ID-TIMS method. This age is consistent with the activation of Alpine orogenic processes in the Pamir–Himalayan belt and the formation of pegmatite-bearing granites of the Hindu Kush.</p>
