Abstract

In the territory of the Northern Caspian Lowland, numerous unusual elevated areas rise above the surrounding endless plains, which constitute the ancient seabed. The uniqueness of these sites stems from their uplift due to the salt mountains beneath the surface. Known as salt domes, these formations manifest in various ways. Some have nearly reached the Earth’s surface, exposing ancient rocks from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras. These uplifts are often associated with salt lakes that possess rich deposits of various salts. The raised areas undergo deterioration from various natural factors, including the erosive and dissolving activity of melt-rainwater, relentless heat, severe frosts, and strong winds. Human economic activities also contribute significantly to the alteration of the landscape in these regions. As a result, these areas are characterized by a constantly changing landscape, abundant with mineral resources. The region adjacent to the salt Lake Baskunchak and Bolshoye Bogdo Mountain is one such area. It is here that, throughout the geological history of the Pricaspian Lowland, the necessary conditions for karst formation emerged. Due to the exceptional significance of the Baskunchak vicinity, recognized as a unique natural complex, the Bogdo–Baskunchak State Nature Reserve was established in 1993, known since 2015 as Regional Nature Park “Baskunchak.” In 1997, a portion of its territory was designated as a State Reserve. Consequently, strict regulations were enforced within the protected area. Cattle camps were removed, hunting was banned, and all other forms of economic activity that could harm the protected territory were prohibited. This created a genuine opportunity to preserve this remarkable part of nature.
