The Age of the Urlesh Formation (Basal Level of the Paleozoic Succession of the Northern Slope of the Greater Caucasus) and the Sources of Its Clastic Material
摘要
The first statistically significant results in terms of quantity and quality for U‒Pb isotopic dating of dZr grains from sandstones of the Urlesh Formation, which composes the basal level of Paleozoic succession of the Bechasyn zone of the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus, are presented. The analysis of the results obtained has shown that the accumulation time of the Urlesh Formation is not older than the Late Tremadocian. Among the ages of dZr, the Early Neoproterozoic and older values are completely absent; therefore, the Urlesh Formation was not formed on the margin of the East European Platform (Baltica). The presence of a bright Peri-Gondwanan provenance signal in the sandstones of the Urlesh Formation suggests considering it and the underlying formations of the Khasaut metamorphic terrane as a fragment of the Cadomian–Avalonian margin of Gondwana.
