Abstract <p>The effect of long-term stress exposure to water deficiency on the leaves of contrasting wheat varieties Buryatskaya ostistaya (drought-tolerant) and Diamant 2 (sensitive) at the tillering stage was studied. The study object was grown in controlled conditions of a climate chamber and subjected to stress corresponding to the climatic conditions of Western and Eastern Siberia in the spring period for 10 days. The following parameters were analyzed: relative water content (RWC), osmotic potential, quantitative content of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in leaves and chloroplasts, level of diene conjugates (DC), and content of photosynthetic pigments. The results of the study showed that he Buryatskaya ostistaya variety differed from the sensitive one in that, in the first (1 and 4) days of stress exposure, it demonstrated a decrease in the level of ROS both in the leaves and in the chloroplasts, a more pronounced decrease in DC, a stable chlorophyll content throughout the entire study period, and a noticeable increase in the content of carotenoids and the Car/(Ch <i>a</i> + Ch <i>b</i>) ratio on the days 1 and 7 of drought. The obtained results allowed us to identify differences in the adaptive mechanisms of varieties, which can become the basis for future research in the field of agronomy and plant biology aimed at increasing the resistance of agricultural crops to adverse environmental conditions.</p>
