Abstract <p>This article describes a method for studying the subjective world by recording neural activity in animals engaged in free behavior. Using examples of neural activity, it is demonstrated that recording behavioral events and learning history allows us to discover the specifics of the subjective world from a first-person perspective. The differences between this methodological approach and classical notions of the computer metaphor in cognitive science are discussed. Examples of complex methods for identifying cognitive structure and their results are presented. According to these methods, cognitive structure appears to contain representations not of objects but of skills for interacting with the environment, and has a hierarchical structure from general skills to specific ones.</p>
