Abstract <p>The documentary and artistic portrayal of Siberia based on the memoirs and epistolary writings of the Decmbrists is examined. The changing perceptions of Siberia among the Decembrists and their wives are considered, from the moment they were sent to hard labor until their release into exile and departure under amnesty. Excerpts from the Decembrists’ letters and memoirs are presented, reflecting their attitudes toward Siberian nature, the local population, their cultural and economic differences from those of Central Russia, and ethnographic notes on the culture and traditions of the indigenous Siberian population.</p>
