Crystallizing the Professional Self: A Psycholinguistic Longitudinal Study of Lexicon, Metaphor, and Modality in Civil Aviation Pilots

Professional enculturation in high-stakes environments like aviation entails mastering not only technical skills but also a specialized language that encodes community values, cognitive schemas, and identity. Despite the recognized importance of language in mediating thought and action under risk, longitudinal studies that systematically track objective linguistic markers of personal potential across professional development stages remain scarce. Aims: This study investigates the psycholinguistic code of a pilot’s professional identity by identifying specific lexical, metaphorical, and modal patterns in their self-descriptions and tracing their evolution from novices to experts. Methodology: A five-year longitudinal study (N = 247 male pilots/cadets) employed modified repertory grids to elicit spontaneous verbal constructs (e.g., calculated–impulsive”). The resulting corpus (>6000 constructs) was analyzed using (1) lexical and statistical analysis (frequency lists, semantic field clustering via the program AntConc; (2) metaphor analysis (MIPVU protocol: Metaphor Identification Protocol VU University Amsterdam); (3) modality analysis (epistemic, deontic, dynamic); (4) multivariate statistics (factor, cluster, and regression analyses integrating linguistic indices with psychometric data). Results: Three dominant psycholinguistic patterns robustly distinguished professional stages: (1) lexicon: a shift from affective/existential lexis (freedom, dream, drive) among cadets to procedural/technological (algorithm, reliability, parameter) among line pilots. Experts (test pilots/instructors) displayed an integrated profile, adding systemic analysis terms (prediction, edge mode, compensation); (2) metaphor: a progression from “Flight as adventure/challenge”, through “Flight as precise work/service”, to a complex expert model of “Flight as dialogue/working at the edge of possibility”; (3) modality: a significant decrease in dynamic modality (want, dream) and an increase in deontic (must, obliged) and epistemic (know, predict) modalities. Cluster analysis based on linguistic indices differentiated groups with varying professional effectiveness. Regression modeling showed linguistic variables were significant predictors of expert-rated success. Conclusions: Professionalization in civil aviation involves a measurable “linguistic crystallization” of identity, reflecting and potentially constituting cognitive and attitudinal development. Monitoring these psycholinguistic markers offers a novel, objective tool for assessing developmental stages and predicting professional adaptation.
