Abstract <p>The place and significance of the Bulgarian issue in relations between the Allies of the Anti-Hitler Coalition in 1941–1945 are examined in the context of developments on the fronts of World War II. While the Western powers’ interest in Bulgaria was temporary, tied to specific military and political objectives, for the Soviet leadership, this small Balkan country, located “in the heart of the Balkans,” was an important component of the Soviet Union’s overall security strategy in the Black Sea–Mediterranean region. The understanding of this by the members of the Anti-Hitler Coalition determined the intensity of the “battle for Bulgaria” on the threshold of war and peace, even though the country, by mutual agreement, was placed within the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence.</p>
