US R&D Funding: Current Trends

Abstract
Current trends in funding R&D in the United States in the third decade of the 21st century are examined. Both the structure of sources of funding and the structure of performing sectors in the United States are analyzed. It is found out that the leading sector of R&D funding in the United States is business. This sector also leads in R&D expenditure in applied research and experimental design and development. As for basic research, it is concentrated mostly at the universities and at government-owned laboratories. It is also revealed that the United States remains the leading country in overall R&D expenditure in the world. It also takes third position in the share of R&D expenditure in GDP.
