The Capital and Local Factors in the Development of the Jubilee Culture of Olonets Province

The jubilee culture of Olonets province is considered in the context of the relationship between the center and the periphery. Based on a wide range of sources, the features of preparing for and holding local celebrations that marked historical anniversaries of both all-Russian and local scales are revealed. It is shown what changes occurred in the jubilee culture of Olonets province during the period from the first to the last anniversary (1872–1913). Particular attention is paid to situations in which there was a need for contacts between metropolitan and provincial officials. In addition, the symbolic and utilitarian significance of local celebrations is revealed. As a result, it is concluded that the jubilee policy strengthened the ties between the center and the periphery in the Russian Empire.
