Abstract

The technology of ultrasound has been found to be suitable for water and wastewater remediation as one of the advanced oxidation process. Power ultrasound, as an emerging green technology has received increasing attention of the petroleum industry. The physical and chemical effects of the periodic oscillation and implosion of acoustic cavitation bubbles can be employed to perform a variety of functions. This knowledge has been utilized in the degradation of organic constituents during the cavitation procedure of ultrasound waves. The occurrence of cavitation would give upsurge to a number of interesting physical and chemical special effects to segregate and oxidize pollutants in water/wastewater. Ultrasounds pledge scattering and emulsification of matters giving to the effect of coagulation and degassing, impacting the crystallization and dissolution processes. It has been well-known that ultrasound could cause a diversity of chemical changes of the constituents, this comprises of oxidation, reduction, dissolution, polymerization etc. The elucidation of these behavior is realized in a range of effects such as cavitation, micro-flows, shock waves, acoustic wind etc. In this reviewing paper, previous research concerning the optimization of ultrasonic decomposition of water/wastewater remediation systems in particular for oily wastewater are wisely reviewed. The basic principles of ultrasound and cavitation are presented, and the consequence of influencing parameters on the decay reactions comprising the ultrasonic power, frequency, dissolved gases, and targeted constituents are revised and discussed.
